National Music Museum

Features: Founded in 1973 on the campus of USD, the National Music Museum is one of the great institutions of its kind in the world. Its renowned collections which include more than 14,500 American, European and non-western instruments from virtually all cultures and historical periods are the most inclusive anywhere. The instruments are housed in a 20,000 square-foot, climate controlled building and are exhibited in nine beautiful galleries. Friday-noon brown bag lunch programs feature collection specific concerts with appearances from artists from around the world.

Clay County Park
Address: 4 Miles Southwest of Vermillion off SD 50, Vermillion, SD 57069

Features: Situated on the last natural stretch of the Missouri River. Enjoy 34 acres of pristinely preserved parklands of the vast and beautiful wilderness with breathtaking views. The three mile paved nature trail showcases the beautiful and diverse plant and wildlife and includes a lookout area over the magnificent Missouri River. There are volleyball courts, a horseshoe court, electrical campsites, picnic shelters, playgrounds and a boat ramp and dock.

Historic Downtown Vermillion

Features: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, historic downtown Vermillion is home to over twenty-five retail and specialty stores, a variety of eateries, movie theatres, pubs, and numerous other distinctive businesses and services. Take a relaxing stroll down Main Street, while enjoying the unique architecture and the friendly atmosphere that Vermillion prides itself on.

W. H. Over Museum

Features: Home of the extensive collection of William H. Over, a distinguished naturalist of the northern plains from 1913 to 1945. You will also find the David and Elizabeth Clark Memorial Collection of pre-reservation and early reservation Lakota art and artifacts, and the Stanley J. Morrow collection of historic South Dakota photo- graphs. The Lewis and Clark Learning Center with an 8' x 20' mural depicting their walk up Spirit Mound on August 25, 1804, and a touch screen computer system allows visitors to learn more about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and their visit to the area. Other displays include pioneer artifacts, firearms and historic clothing. The gift shop will guarantee that you will take home souvenirs like no others.

Spirit Mound
Location: Six miles north of Vermillion off SD Hwy 19

Open: Year round with a hiking/bike trail and a picnic and restroom area.

Features: Walk in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark and join in the history by standing at the top of Spirit Mound. Spirit Mound, or Paha Wakan, was known by the tribes and was thought to be occupied by little people that would shoot any human who came near the mound. On August 25th, 1804, Captains Lewis and Clark took eleven men to explore the mysterious mound. Lewis and Clark climbed to the summit and wrote "from the top of the hill we beheld the most butiful landscape". Interpretive signs along the trail tell the story of Spirit Mound.

Austin-Whittemore House Museum

Features: The Austin-Whittemore House Museum is a home that was built atop a bluff along the river after a disastrous flood swept three-fourths of the town away in 1881. Admire the 1883 Italian villa architecture of this stately home, filled with Victorian furnishings and items of local historical interest, including many historical records and documents from this area. Offering genealogy services. Home of the Clay County Historical Society. Free admission.

The Bluffs Golf Course

Features: Tee off on this par 72, 18-hole, multi-level public golf course that is situated one hundred feet above the Missouri River Valley, and finish the hole below the bluff, among woods and wetlands. The beautiful landscaping with ten acres of reflecting lakes and eight acres of wetlands would entice any golf lover to this magnificent course. Barstow Park

Features: Soccer and football fields, lighted tennis courts, lighted softball fields, picnic shelters, playground areas, ice rink with warming house, a fitness course and restrooms, all on the 19.39 acre park.

Cotton Park
Address: South Dakota Street, Vermillion, SD 57069

Features: Located on the banks of the Vermillion River, this 30 acre park includes natural grasslands and wetlands, a historic wooden bridge, fishing pier, soccer fields, and a hiking, biking and running trail along the river.

Lions Park
Address: On Cherry Street, between Princeton and High Streets, Vermillion, SD 57069

Features: Playground areas, lighted softball fields, picnic shelters, restrooms and electrical camping facilities.

Prentis Park
Address: Plum Street - between Main and Clark Streets, Vermillion, SD 57069

Features: The park has a newly renovated swimming pool with a 110 foot water slide, lighted basketball courts, lighted horseshoe court, lighted shuffleboard, picnic shelters, restrooms, playground areas, lighted volleyball courts, lighted baseball field, practice softball field and a band shell.

Missouri River & Mulberry Bend Overlook
Location: South of Vermillion across the Newcastle-Vermillion Bridge (SD 19 & NE 15)

Features: The Missouri River is a meandering, living river, with no dams or canalization, forming much of the border between South Dakota and Nebraska. The river valley is as wide as two miles in some places, a testament to the twists and turns the river has taken over the last several thousand years. Mulberry Bend Overlook sits atop the bluffs overlooking the pristine Missouri River and Mulberry Point, which is one of the narrowest points along the river. See nature at its finest with breathtaking views of the historic river.

DakotaDome

Features: Constructed in 1979, the DakotaDome is one of the region's most recognizable structures. The DakotaDome is home to USD Coyote Athletics, the SD High School Football Playoffs, the Dakota Farm Show and numerous other events. This 145,000 square foot, 10,000 seat indoor facility features 7 basketball courts, 3 volleyball courts, 4 racquetball courts, a 25 meter pool, an 8-lane 200 meter track, and a full size football field with artificial turf.

Features: Flagship building of The University of South Dakota. Built in 1883, it is now home to the largest collection of work by internationally celebrated American Indian artist Oscar Howe. Old Main is rich in history, tradition, and a symbol of the quest for excellence at the University.

Features: Local artists, Vermillion school children and USD art students display their works throughout the year. All ages musical performances turn the Arts Center into a concert venue for local musicians and alternative bands from around the country.
