SD High School ALL-STAR Football Game is Moving to Vermillion
Vermillion Chamber & Development Company Announces winning bid for Historical South Dakota Football Event to be played at the Dome The Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company is proud to announce that Vermillion will now be the home of the Annual South Dakota High School All-Star Football Game, presented by Sanford Health. The game will take place on July 9th for 2016, and will then take place in early June thereafter.
During the recent SDHSAA State Football Championship games in the USD DakotaDome, in November 2015, news of the All-Star game's pending future was discovered. Vermillion officials received word that Aberdeen may not host the annual All-Star game. "Once we heard of the opportunity that a new community could host this great event, we were excited. When we realized there might be seniors who could miss out, we decided we weren't going to let that happen." said Nate Welch, Executive Director of the Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company said.
"We were only able to do this because of the great work of all of our volunteers, partnerships with the University of South Dakota and the coordinated efforts of Visitor and Tourism through the VCDC." Welch said. "This year is the first year we've coordinated BID dollars towards Visitor and Tourism, including the creation of a Sports Authority Committee. This is a huge win and one of many new events we look forward to bringing to Vermillion for South Dakotans to enjoy."
One of the main changes to the annual event will be the cost to the athletes. In recent years, cost for participants was as much as $300 per player. The VCDC says that registration fee has been wiped out. "This game is to be an annual celebration and an opportunity for South Dakota Seniors to play one last high school game. Other changes and improvements the event are expected, including housing in air-conditioned dorms at the University of South Dakota, evening activities and a recognition banquet that will be open to alumni, players, coaches and families of the All-stars.
Vermillion Awarded Community of the Year
Vermillion was named Large Community of the Year by Gov. Dennis Daugaard on Tuesday evening in Sioux Falls at the Governor's Economic Development Conference. Mayor Jack Powell, USD President James Abbott, and Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company (VCDC) President Gerry Tracy accepted the award on behalf of the community. "We greatly appreciate Governor Daugaard's recognition of Vermillion. Our partnership with the Governor's Office of Economic Development has been a key factor in our community's success," said Tracy.
Vermillion has been successful in achieving economic growth due to partnerships between the City of Vermillion, Clay County, the Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company (VCDC), the University of South Dakota, Vermillion School District, Governor's Office of Economic Development, as well as with various public and private entities throughout the community.
"Vermillion recognizes that to be successful in this economy, communities have to do more than they have in the past to encourage growth," said Nate Welch, incoming VCDC executive director. "Vermillion is breaking the mold of traditional economic development by taking a progressive approach toward talent attraction and overall community enhancement, including addressing the city's housing needs." The VCDC has broken ground on Bliss Pointe, a new housing development, to offer low to moderately priced lots for new home construction.
In addition to housing and community enhancement, the VCDC is addressing the real estate and workforce training needs of companies, including the construction of a 32,000 square foot office facility to house Eagle Creek Software Services, the development of an IT Academy in partnership with GOED and USD to better prepare new graduates for the workforce, and creation of skilled trades courses in partnership with the Vermillion School District to help meet the needs of local employers.
"This award is not as much about our activities in the past year as it is about the culmination and continuation of our economic development strategy over the past several years," said Steve Howe, outgoing VCDC executive director.
